Dear Major League Baseball,

We missed you! Welcome back! I’d say Happy Opening Day, except we all know that it isn’t really Opening Day now is it?

Nope, technically the 2012 Major League Baseball Opening Day was played last Wednesday at 5 am EST. Yes, you scheduled the Opening Series of the National Pastime on the other side of the planet between two of the worst teams in the league last year at a time when NO ONE in the U.S. could watch. But yet it was there. Spoiling the magical aura of the start of the season. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, last night you forced the defending World Series Champion Cardinals to travel to the Mecca of Neon and Art Deco in Miami.Yes, we get it, it’s the rebirth of a franchise, but it’s still the Marlins for crying out loud.

Which leaves us to today. The traditional “Opening Day” in which only half the league will have their opener, and then all but two of those teams will have off tomorrow when the other half of the league kicks off the season. The term “soft opener” doesn’t even begin to describe this mess.

And what about the poor Cincinnati Reds, you know, the ORIGINAL professional baseball team, opening up the whole shebang as they did for decades upon decades? You have them throwing the first pitch today at 4 pm after five other games will already be underway. That’s right, the traditional opening game will technically be 9th game played in the 2012 season. C’mon now, that’s just silly.

So it comes down to this: You know the saying “This isn’t your father’s (insert formerly “boring” thing that is now totally AWESOMER)?” Well here’s the thing when it comes to baseball: WE WANT IT TO BE OUR FATHER’S GAME. We NEED it to be our father’s game. That’s exactly why we love it so much. Like James Earl Jones said inField of Dreams:

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.”

Please understand this MLB. You are not, and you will NEVER be the NFL. And that’s fine. We don’t WANT you to be the NFL. The NFL is a machine. We go there for primal thrills and controlled violence. We turn to you for the magic and the beauty of the game. We want you to be the same sport you were when we were kids, and when our dads were kids, and when their dads were kids.You are a sport built on traditions being passed down from generation to generation. Where everything is old yet new again. And Opening Day is the embodiment of that majestic promise of baseball.

So, MLB, as someone who loves you deeply, I want to look into your eyes and beg you: Don’t try to be something you’re not. Be proud of your traditions even if they don’t fit into a prime time schedule or into a global marketing scheme. You’re bigger and better and more important than all of that. You just need to believe it and remember it sometimes.

This movie begins over the Pacific Ocean and continues over North and South America before entering daylight near Antarctica. Visible cities, countries and landmarks include (in order) Vancouver Island, Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Phoenix. Multiple cities in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Mexico City, the Gulf of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, El Salvador, Lightning in the Pacific Ocean, Guatemala, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon. Also visible is the earths ionosphere (thin yellow line), a satellite (55sec) and the stars of our galaxy.
